During the 1992 presidential campaign in the USA Bill Clinton’s advisor had a sign posted in the campaign headquarters: “it’s the economy stupid”. He did this to remind Clinton and everyone in his team that this was the most important issue, and they were not to lose sight of this.
In this season of electioneering in the UK there are a whole host of important issues, but it probably still remains true that the economy is the most vital thing. Which party is best to handle it I would not presume to say !!
But what about Jesus and His ministry? What is most important to Him ? If we look at the Gospel record there is little doubt that it is the ‘Kingdom of God’ (or the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ in Matthew). It is the first thing that Jesus refers to at the start of his ministry: “The time has come…The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15). Jesus then proceeds to explain and demonstrate that Kingdom in his subsequent ministry with many memorable parables and powerful deeds. There is little doubt that the Kingdom is the most important thing in Jesus ministry – so we might say to ourselves lest we lose sight of this: “It’s the Kingdom, stupid!”
But what is the Kingdom of God ? The easiest way to think of it is this way: it is heaven on earth. It is God’s heavenly rule re-established on earth, putting right all that has been spoilt by sin and suffering. We see from Jesus ministry it is a Kingdom of love, a Kingdom of healing, a Kingdom of righteousness, a Kingdom of justice for the oppressed, a Kingdom of everlasting peace.
One day the Kingdom will come in all its fullness, but for now we pray and work for the kingdom cause alongside Jesus: “May your Kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
I don’t know how you intend to vote, but let’s remember in this election and beyond the most important thing for Jesus, and therefore the most important thing for us as Christians, is the Kingdom of God – “It’s the Kingdom, stupid!”
