God is into healing. That seems pretty clear from the Bible. Not only are there many healing accounts in the Old Testament, we also see from the New Testament that the ministry of Jesus was essentially one of teaching and healing. He healed people from all kinds of diseases, enabled the blind to see, the deaf to hear, the lame to walk, and even raised some from the dead. Yes, God is into healing.
That healing ministry continued through the early church and is still very much part of the ministry of the church today. When we fall ill, or are struggling in some way physically, psychologically or emotionally we turn to the Lord in prayer. Sometimes we ask others to pray with us – as James encourages us to do in his letter – James 5:13-16.
But does God answer our prayers for healing? I will be honest and say that I have never seen anyone healed instantaneously like in the Bible stories. I would love to, but I haven’t. I’ve been in meetings where certain things were claimed, but I’ve never seen a “miracle” in any sense that I could verify. However, that does not mean that I have not seen the Lord answer prayers for healing in remarkable and I would say miraculous ways.
I know a lady who was given just a few years to live about 15 years ago but we prayed and she is still alive today. My wife Angie was totally paralysed about 20 years ago by her MS, but we prayed and she made an amazing recovery and hasn’t had a major relapse since. I recall a man who had a head injury and had to be resuscitated at least once and his life was in the balance, but we prayed and he came round that evening. There are so many others I have prayed with down the years and while some do not recover, it still amazes me how well folk do once we pray. Medical treatment plus prayer is such a powerful combination.
So what about me? What about the cancer ? Now it’s my turn to be on the receiving end. Well I continue to seek the Lord’s healing. I know others have been praying earnestly as well. So what do I believe about my situation? Well, I certainly believe the Lord has given me a remarkable recovery from the extremely brutal treatment I had in the first part of the year. I’m not 100%, but compared to others I have been really “fortunate” with how well I have done post-treatment. Well we did pray! So praise the Lord! I also believe that I will be around for some time yet despite the secondary on my spine. I feel the Lord has given me certain promises about this and I know He keeps his promises.
So all in all, I believe that the Lord is healing me. I’m not bothered if it’s not instantaneous. My main concern is that it is His healing, and whether he uses medicine or supernatural means, or a combination of both, it doesn’t matter. Either way He remains my loving Heavenly Father and the God who is into healing and I remain his grateful child.
