All Toddler Groups Cancelled Until Further Notice

Posted on 17 March 2020 by Natalie Bowers

After long discussions this evening following the latest advice from the government, we have made the decision to suspend all of our groups with immediate effect. It was a difficult decision knowing that being able to go to groups with our little ones is essential to us as parents and carers.

Do look out for updates about when we will be able to reopen, but this will be based on the advice we receive from the government.

If you do need anything, please do get in touch even if it’s just for a chat. Either by Facebook Messenger, email (hannah.lowry@horndeanbaptistchurch.org.uk) or phone (07934 609648).

Faith That Works!

Posted on 17 May 2015 by Natalie Bowers

IMG_0619“What good is it to say you have faith, when you don’t do anything to show that you really do have faith?” That’s the question that James asked in his letter to the young church and that’s the question we explored in today’s all-age service.

After a delicious breakfast of bacon butties, we thought about what faith is and we watched a clip from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade … the part where he has to take a leap of faith. You can see some of our ideas in the picture. Then we thought about some of the excuses we come up with for not doing what we know we should be doing. Answers ranged from, ‘the dog ate my homework,’ to, ‘I had to feed my elephant!’

IMG_0621As well as singing songs (including What Love Is This? Love the Lord Your God and Hear the Call of the Kingdom) we played a game of ‘action’ charades and got in some practice for the quiz night with a round of Guess the TV Adverts, all of which were about It’s the Real Thing That Does What It Says On the Tin!

We also thought about what an ‘ideal’ Christian would be like. People came up with lots of ideas, such as they’d have a big, open heart, a trustworthy brain and giving hands. To the right, you can see a picture of what one group came up with. I do like the idea of a jet pack …

Natalie, aged 41.

Mega Makers!

Posted on 11 May 2015 by Natalie Bowers

IMG_0570At Mega Makers on Monday, we made little gardens. I made one for an alien. I used lots of pompoms and lollipop sticks. Next we made a vehicle that could carry a ball without it falling out. Mine looked like a spaceship. My ball stayed in my vehicle because I put a lid on it.

After that we listened to a person telling a story on a CD. The story was about when Jesus wasn’t in his tomb. Then we had a quiz which was based on the story. At snack time, we had pizza and vegetables and for pudding there was chocolate cake and fruit. To finish off, we did some experiments. My experiment was to invent a boat that could glide across water. Unfortunately, my boat sank!

My favourite part of Mega Makers was making my spaceship.

Thank you, Hannah, for a great afternoon!

Sophie, aged 9.

Children Helping Children

Posted on 24 March 2015 by Natalie Bowers

IMG_0176On Sunday 22nd March we had an all-age service and some of the children held a sale. We raised £160 by selling cakes, homemade candles and cards, loom bands, hamma bead creations, and bric-a-brac. We were very busy and it was lots of fun having a corner to ourselves. The money will go to a charity called Melon Mission which helps children in Africa.

Who Is My Neighbour?

Posted on 15 March 2015 by Natalie Bowers

IMG_0085In Bubbles today we learned about The Good Samaritan from the Gospel of Luke. My favourite part of the story was where the Samaritan took the injured man to a hotel and paid for him to be looked after. We learned that our neighbour is anyone who needs our help. We also learned that help can come from the most surprising places!

After we listened to the story, we played a game where we bandaged someone with toilet paper. I loved being bandaged as I felt like an Egyptian mummy! Also some people made cardboard donkeys and men. Some of us made play dough characters, which was fun. At the end we prayed for specific people. I prayed for my mum, my dad and my brother.

Sophie, aged 9.

Pancake Party!

Posted on 1 March 2015 by Natalie Bowers

20150217_124223Many of you may have heard of a pancake toss using a frying pan, but have you ever tried a pancake toss using a parachute? On Tuesday 17th February, at our pancake party, this was one of the fun filled activities that we tried out with great success!

As our guests arrived, they chose from a selection of crafts – some messy and others not quite so messy – and toys. For Jessica, aged 3, her best bit was “making a gluey picture” and for mum, “the girls got to get messy with glue without me worrying about them making a mess of our home!”

Then grown ups and children alike enjoyed a lunch of hot dogs and pancakes – not both together! There were some interesting combinations of toppings – mostly resulting in sugar on sugar!

Afterward, it was certainly time to run off some of that extra energy! The children enjoyed tossing pancakes with and without a parachute as well as a round of Duck, Duck, Goose. The party ended with an energetic rendition of the Hokey Cokey.

For more information about our activities for kids, call our Children and Families Leader, Hannah Lowry, on 07934 609648 or email her at hannah.lowry@horndeanbaptistchurch.co.uk.

Mega Makers!

Posted on 27 January 2015 by Natalie Bowers

IMG_9601We went to Mega Makers at Church today. We made spaghetti and marshmallow towers to see which one was the strongest to hold a toy car.

Our favourite part was when we mixed baking soda with shaving foam and poured vinegar on it to made it bubble like a volcano.

IMG_9626We had a snack half way through which was yummy and we had lots of fun with our friends.

Hannah, Helen and Jim always make it fun and interesting. We love going to Mega Makers!!!

Great Baptist Bake Off

Posted on 25 January 2015 by Matthew Bowers

mug1At Youth Group last Friday, we took over Hannah’s kitchen and tried our hand at baking mug cakes (a cake-for-one baked in your very own mug). The kitchen was transformed into a hive of activity as flour was measured, eggs were cracked and butter was melted.

mug3Matt’s cake mix was rather explosive, erupting in the microwave and threatening to takeover the whole kitchen like something from Doctor Who.

mug2As the group enjoyed tasting their creations, we discussed the Bible story about the man lowered through the roof to be healed by Jesus. We debated the logistics of lowering someone through a roof on a bed and also why Jesus forgave him as well as healing him.

Penguins, Parrots, Prisms and Plasters at the All-Age Service

Posted on 18 January 2015 by Natalie Bowers

2015 Jan 18 AAS_003 V2web ‘Is it Messy Church today?’

Welcoming at the door, you never quite know what question you might be asked. ‘No, I don’t think it’s called Messy Church. It’s an all-age service. Lots of things going on and we have tea and coffee and doughnuts over at the back of the church …  and welcome!’

So much going on and such a lot to think about. There were parrots, penguins, prisms, post boxes, Pharisees, prayers and plasters! And the theme for today: the healing of the Paralytic.

2015 Jan 18 AAS_006 V2webWe thought about our Good News and made the front page of a newspaper. We thought about the healing power of God and how only God can forgive sins. Luke’s Gospel chapter 5 verse 20 says, ‘When Jesus saw their faith, he said “Friend, your sins are forgiven”.

We sang songs about God showing His power: God is Good, He Is the Lord and He Reigns On High, ending the service with a rousing To God Be the Glory. Lovely to see the children joining in with maracas, tambourines, a triangle and waving ribbons in the air.

2015 Jan 18 AAS_009 V2webYes we did have some little spills of water whilst we conducted our scientific experiments using mirrors, prisms, colouring pens (Everyone loves colouring in!) cocktail sticks, straws and spinners … so you could have called it ‘messy church’, but all was soon mopped up, and, looking around the room, great fun was had by all.

Some of us will still be trying to work out how to see the Magic Eye pictures – things hidden and things revealed!

by Helen W. (a grown-up)

Other thoughts on today’s all-age-service:

‘My favourite part was eating doughnuts. I enjoyed playing with the water and lights.’ Iestyn (an under-10).

2015 Jan 18 AAS_008 V2web‘Very creative. I particularly enjoyed the worship music. The drumming was excellent.’ Matthew (the drummer)

‘It was really accessible for kids. Really relaxed. It doesn’t matter if they make noise.’ Marcus (another grown-up)

‘It was excellent. I really enjoyed it. Inspiring. I’m a visual person, so learning form the activities works well.’ Jane (another grown-up)

‘Really interesting. There were loads of activities to do.’ Angharad (a young person)

‘My favourite thing about the all-age service was the scientific bits because they were fun and interesting.’ Sophie (an under-10)

‘Hannah deserves an Oscar!’ Dave (Hannah’s husband)

Our next all-age service will be on Sunday 22 March.

Exodus: Gods and Kings

Posted on 16 January 2015 by Natalie Bowers

movies-exodus-gods-and-kings-poster-01Last night, Youth Group went to the cinema to see Exodus: Gods and Kings. At Chichester Cineworld we bought popcorn, ice cream and Slushies and went and sat in the smallest screen I’d ever seen.

Exodus: Gods and Kings is a film about Moses saving the Hebrew slaves from Egypt. It was a bit gory at times – the Nile turned red with blood when the crocodiles attacked some fisherman – but I think it was an amazing film. The best bit was when God parted the Red Sea. I found it interesting that Moses didn’t die on numerous occasions even though Pharaoh sent people to kill him.

In the car on the way home, we had lots of fun discussing everything that was similar and different to the story of Moses in the Bible.

Bethlehem and Biscuits

Posted on 9 January 2015 by Natalie Bowers

indexOn Christmas Eve we had a family service. When we came in we had to draw a picture of ourselves. There was a big picture of Bethlehem on the wall and we stuck the pictures of ourselves on there. When everyone had arrived we started to make characters from the Nativity by drawing round our hand and decorating them. I made Joseph, baby Jesus and an angel. Other people made Mary, shepherds, the three kings and cows. We stuck our characters on the Bethlehem picture as each song came up. For example, when we sang Away in a Manger we stuck the pictures of Baby Jesus up. On the projector screen the Nativity Story was told using Lego figures. After the service we had a drink and some biscuits. We all had a lot of fun and the Bethlehem picture looked very good at the end.
